THE INCREDIBLY BRIEF STORY OF HOW WE GOT SCREWED - BY PAUL KRUGMAN
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/07/opinion/krugman-confronting-the-malefactors.html?ref=paulkrugman

In the first act, bankers took advantage of deregulation to run wild (and pay themselves princely sums), inflating huge bubbles through reckless lending. In the second act, the bubbles burst — but bankers were bailed out by taxpayers, with remarkably few strings attached, even as ordinary workers continued to suffer the consequences of the bankers’ sins. And, in the third act, bankers showed their gratitude by turning on the people who had saved them, throwing their support — and the wealth they still possessed thanks to the bailouts — behind politicians who promised to keep their taxes low and dismantle the mild regulations erected in the aftermath of the crisis.

Given this history, how can you not applaud the protesters for finally taking a stand?

Yo WTF'ers!

Well answer the question, damnit! Who's scarier, the Mormon or the Black Guy?

The magic underwear Mittbot or the Kenyan Socialist Muslim Part African American Alien From Outer Space?

The answer is neither of them is particularly scary.

But only one of them is definable.

Because for the life of me, I can't define Mitt Romney.

There he was yesterday in rural PA, babbling on about a touch screen system at the Wawa convenience store (which he annoyingly kept calling Wa-Wa's... Wawa ain't plural Mittens).

You touch what kind of bread you want, what kind of meat you want, what kind of cheese, what kind of condiments, and presto-chango, they make your sammich.

Mittens was blown away.

ABCNEWS:

But more than anything, Romney seemed blown away by the Wawa computers, which he raved about.
"You press a little touchtone key pad… You touch this, touch this, touch this, go pay the cashier, and there's your sandwich," Romney said. "It's amazing!"

Um, yeah. When you don't get out much, when you never, ever conduct personal errands for your own self your own self, everything amazes you.

I don't think that if you tried you could find a more nail-on-the-head metaphor for being out of touch, then the rich guy who doesn't get out much being frighteningly amazed by a computer touch screen at a convenience store.

I've never seen anybody babble on about nothing in a transparent and frankly always embarrassing attempt to look like a regular guy. It's pathetic. Even a little bit scary? No, no. Just pathetic.

The obvious comparison?

George H.W. Bush and his lack of comfortability on the campaign trail. He was shaking babies and kissing hands.

And was simply amazed at the device known as the grocery store scanner.

COMMENTARY MAGAZINE:

The notion of Bush 41 as being clueless about the struggle of ordinary Americans was captured in one cringe-inducing moment when he expressed amazement at a supermarket price scanner, a device that had been in use in most stores for years. While it wasn’t really fair to criticize a man who had spent the previous 12 years as president and vice president for his unfamiliarity with the routines of grocery shopping, it reinforced the notion of him being a patrician who was clueless about ordinary life.

We're now looking at H.W. through rose colored HBO glasses. (The new love Poppy-Doc "41" is not on TV... it's on HBO). I'll give him this, he was actually able to reach a compromise and be responsible. My G.O.P. buddy Mean Bill Green is still pissed that Poppy flipped on the read-my-lips-no-new taxes pledge, but H.W. was actually trying to do the right thing. Not the right wing nutbag tea party thing. Which is all they know how to do these days.

Do I think Mittens is a far right wing nutbag? No.

Do I think he'll carry out their policies to pander his way to the Presidency?

You betcha.

But what does Mittens think at his core?

Does he have a core?

Not sure. Mittens is a bit of a twinkie. Not a Dan Quayle/Saracuda twink.

I'm just suggesting his core is comprised of cream filling. Nothing solid.

What's he really like?

You can't put your finger on it. Then again, I've never known any multi-millionaires personally.

He doesn't make policy gaffes because he has no policies. He vaguely says he'll back the Ryan budget, which would mercilessly cut social programs. But you can't really tell if he would.

If Mitt were found guilty of a crime he would still have no convictions.

Hey, that's not a bad line. I'm gonna write that down.

He's a slippery little sponge cake, that Mittens.

For example, he says Obama was just being political when he issued the executive order allowing some immigrants not in this country legally to stay here.

SFGATE.COM:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2012/06/17/MNKO1P3F3O.DTL
Mitt Romney refused to say Sunday whether he would overturn President Obama's new policy allowing some young illegal immigrants to stay in the United States.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee said Obama's decision was political, while senior White House adviser David Plouffe said the move wasn't motivated by politics.

Well, duh. I can't believe a politician did something political. Sherlock Freakin' Romney over here.

It's also the right thing to do. And sorry Republicans, your hostile anti-immigrant anti-Hispanic policies and rhetoric are NOT endearing you to Hispanics. Marco Rubio doesn't make things even.

But the weird thing is, he says he opposes the Obama policy, but wouldn't say whether he'd repeal it. He's between Barack and a hard place, not wanting to piss off even more Hispanics, but needing to appeal to the anti-immigrant tea partying bags o' nuts.

You'd think it would be simple. I oppose this. I'd repeal it. Simple. Unless you have no convictions and you have no core and you really don't know how the hell you feel one way or the other, and you don't want to screw up, so you buy time by having no positions and saying zilch.

Mitt Romney is the zilch candidate.

Still, it's practically summertime, and nobody's paying much attention to policy.

Barack Obama isn't scary. He's annoying sometimes. And it is a little scary that he personally picks drone targets. Or is it awesome? Or both?

Scawesome?

Barry ain't exactly Mr. Warm and Fuzzy either, but he's regular guy enough to out regular guy Mittens with one hand tied behind his back. Which is not saying much.

And who could forget Mittens attempt to be one of the folks in Bethel Park, PA, a Pittsburgh suburb. He thought the way to go was to insult the local bakery.

And you would think insulting the cookies would make you look like a regular guy because... because... ???

Does he think because he's learned the name "7-Eleven" that makes him one of us?

Watching Mittens pretend to be a regular human being is going to be one of the most enjoyable and hysterical features of the upcoming campaign.

Wondering what he would actually do if elected... that's the scary part.

I think maybe even he doesn't know.
