THE INCREDIBLY BRIEF STORY OF HOW WE GOT SCREWED - BY PAUL KRUGMAN
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/07/opinion/krugman-confronting-the-malefactors.html?ref=paulkrugman
In the first act, bankers took advantage of deregulation to run wild (and pay themselves princely sums), inflating huge bubbles through reckless lending. In the second act, the bubbles burst — but bankers were bailed out by taxpayers, with remarkably few strings attached, even as ordinary workers continued to suffer the consequences of the bankers’ sins. And, in the third act, bankers showed their gratitude by turning on the people who had saved them, throwing their support — and the wealth they still possessed thanks to the bailouts — behind politicians who promised to keep their taxes low and dismantle the mild regulations erected in the aftermath of the crisis.
Given this history, how can you not applaud the protesters for finally taking a stand?

Yo WTF'ers!
Well this Highmark sex scandal keeps getting funnier by the day. I'm talking snort laughs.
I mean, unless of course you're Dr. Ken Melani, the former Highmark CEO just canned after he went to his affair partner's house and got beaten up by her husband.
Throw in the irony of Dr. Melani hiding a private detective to spy on 28 year old Melissa Myler (the so-called "mistress"), who left her husband to take up with Melani, and in fact even lives with Melani, but then Melani turned the tables and thought she was cheating on him... apparently with her husband.
Oh, and the good Doctor is married too. With four daughters.
Whoa.
But today we get new information from my old pal, the Superman of Employment Attorneys Super Sammy Cordes.
Employment law is a vast swamp of murky byzantine bizarre claptrap. Stuff you think "well of course they can't fire you for that," isn't necessarily true. Turns out most employees don't have nearly the amount of protection they think they have.
On the other hand, employers often go blindly into the night, bull in the china shopping their way into screwing the pooch and, in the end, paying the piper as a result.
Post-Gazette reporter Rich Lord did a good job trying to explain this jumbo of mumbo.
POST-GAZETTE.COM:
http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/news/health/highmark-handling-of-affair-gets-legal-scrutiny-629797/
"When you have supervisors having relationships with subordinate employees, that's a powder keg," said Melvin Vatz, a Downtown-based employment attorney. "Many companies have very specific policies about no fraternization, for that very reason."
Dr. Melani has been with Highmark for 22 years, including nine years in the top job. Ms. Myler was hired in October. Both are married, he for 19 years, she for less than three.
Did the affair, which became an open secret at Highmark, constitute what is known in employment law as a "sexually hostile work environment" ? We put the question to Cordes. Can Highmark fire Melani for getting into a public scuffle, even though it's only a misdemeanor and he'll likely beat the rap anyway? Sammy pontificates.
Can Highmark fire Ms. Myler? Was there anything legally wrong with her apparently being targeted targeted by the board for termination, after Dr. Melani revealed his affair to the board? Sammy gives us the bird's eye lowdown.
Sex scandals are no fun if you're in one. All your friends are hypocrites. And you find out they were never really your friends. There's a lot of clucking and tut-tutting, and how could you-ing, and judgment and guilt and stares and ridicule.
Also, it's not much fun.
I can't really get a handle on the future for these two crazy kids, he of 58 years of age, she 28. (Full disclosure, I'm 54, my girlfriend is 33. So you won't be hearing any snickers from me).
Trust is an issue that haunts most relationships, and if you've hired a private dick to check up on your affair partner, call me crazy, but it seems like there might be a little problem with the old trust factor.
Of course there are no private dicks in public sex scandals.
Ba dum bum.
