THE INCREDIBLY BRIEF STORY OF HOW WE GOT SCREWED - BY PAUL KRUGMAN
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/07/opinion/krugman-confronting-the-malefactors.html?ref=paulkrugman
In the first act, bankers took advantage of deregulation to run wild (and pay themselves princely sums), inflating huge bubbles through reckless lending. In the second act, the bubbles burst — but bankers were bailed out by taxpayers, with remarkably few strings attached, even as ordinary workers continued to suffer the consequences of the bankers’ sins. And, in the third act, bankers showed their gratitude by turning on the people who had saved them, throwing their support — and the wealth they still possessed thanks to the bailouts — behind politicians who promised to keep their taxes low and dismantle the mild regulations erected in the aftermath of the crisis.
Given this history, how can you not applaud the protesters for finally taking a stand?

Yo WTF'ers!
It's both amazing and ridiculous.
Amazing that Sticky Rick, for a short time, could be considered a semi-credible candidate for President of the United States.
It is ridiculous, that the GOP has such a dearth of talent, that no other credible conservative alternative could be found to fight Mittens to the political death.
It is incredible and I'm incredulous.
Incredible that the guy who lost his home state by 17 points, in one of the most lopsided political butt kickings of all time, was able to come back and actually garner enough votes to wins some states.
I'm incredulous that any significant slice of this country would embrace this nut job who wants to destroy the wall between Church and State.
If you want an R rated review of all the dumb things he said, click the comedy video below.
For you junkies, they're easy to recall because they were so monumentally stupid. "Blah" people. JFK made him want to "throw up." Rape babies are a "gift from God." His beyond bizarre super-pac guy Foster Friess saying women should "hold an aspirin between their knees." Wow. And yet, considered semi-credible by enough of the desperate anti-Mittens crowd, that he got a look.
What's wrong with the Republican party? Not enough space here. What's wrong with this country? The GOP is one of two parties. It wants to rip the social safety net from beneath you. It wants more tax cuts for millionaires. The Democratic party is lame. But there's a difference between lame and destructive, a difference between clueless and callous.
Rick Santorum was completely disgraced in 2006. I was co-anchoring the news coverage of KDKA radio with Fred Honsberger that night, sitting in the studio with former County Executive and current GOP Chairman (and Romney supporter) Jim Roddey, who I ran into the other day in Shadyside (snappy dresser, smart, really nice guy for a Republican).
And I recalled how his jaw was dropping in '06 as county after county that was supposed to go pro-Rick went pro-Bobby Casey. When the bummer (for his side) just kept compounding, a dispirited Roddy bailed. Can't blame him. Yours truly on the other hand was positively giddy. Sticky Rick lost his home county by 30 points. It was positively delicious.
And don't forget, he lost to the charismatically challenged Bob Casey. When Bob gives a stump speech, the stump has more charisma.
A friend of mine in the Santorum campaign told me over a year ago that Rick was really running for VEEP. I suspect that was true in the beginning, but Rick's ego and Rick and Mittens' mutual animus took over to make that an impossibility.
I know I know, Ronald Reagan and George Bush, who accused Ronnie of "voodoo economics" (one of the first campaigns I ever covered), and then Ronnie picks H.W. I know, LBJ and JFK. I'm aware of the strange bedfellows.
Although if Sticky Rick had his way bedfellows, strange and otherwise, would be outlawed.
The fact is that while I find Mittens stiff and out of touch, and I'm repulsed by his threat to get rid of Planned Parenthood (pandering) and cut taxes for the rich (what an original GOP idea), he's not stupid. And he's not crazy. And that is why he would never pick a loose cannon like Google boy. If you don't get that, it's too late for me to catch you up.
Congratulations Sticky Rick! You didn't completely embarrass yourself.
OK, check that, you DID completely embarrass yourself, a number of times.
But in your party that seems to be a badge of honor these days.
